Here are the Initial Insurance Steps to Take When Making Aliyah

So you’ve made Aliyah? Mazel tov!

It’s an exciting time. You’re meeting new people, learning new things and acclimating to a new environment, language and culture. You have a million things to do as you wrap up loose ends in your country of origin while simultaneously preparing all the stepping stones for success in Israel.

One of the critical pieces to place inside the puzzle you’re putting together is the right insurance coverage for you and your family. Although you likely had insurance policies where you came from, as you would expect, insurance in Israel may be different than what you’re used to.

We’ve been there.

Our founders were Olim and many members of our team are immigrants or children of immigrants. We’ve come from every corner of the world, and we know the experience of Aliyah is greatly elevated (and much more comfortable) when you have some knowledgeable support.

To make sure you have all the information and resources you need, here’s a mini-guide to insurance in Israel: what the options are, what you need to take care of, and what you should be aware of.

Can choose more than one option.

Car insurance

Car ownership provides you with mobility, convenience and independence, but also the potential perils of physical and financial losses. If you want to drive a car, legally you must purchase Bituach Chovah (Compulsory Insurance), which covers physical harm to you or anyone in your car. Additional options are available for comprehensive insurance and 3rd party insurance.

Property structure insurance

Your home provides you with physical, emotional and financial stability, so it’s critical that you have safeguards in place to protect it. If you purchase a home in Israel with a mortgage, the bank will require you to take out a property insurance policy, but the basic plan they require may or may not be enough to cover what you really need.

Home contents insurance

Whether you’re renting or purchasing a house, you may have a lift of possessions following you to Israel. Whether you’re bringing or buying, your possessions may be an emotional link to the country where you’ve spent your life until now, or a symbol of new beginnings. Either way, you’ll want to give yourself some emotional and financial breathing room in case of loss to theft or natural causes.

Note for renters: regarding your rental contract, it’s important to be aware of your insurance obligations stipulated in the contract. For example, cancellation of the subrogation clause may be an issue you want to investigate. We can help you understand the details.

Private health insurance

It’s great to live in a country with socialized health care, but sometimes the services or medications you need just aren’t available within the public healthcare basket or even the supplementary coverage. Private health insurance gives you a wider range of options when it comes to taking care of your health.
